MK Guild FAQ

Common questions for new and returning players, answered from the Guild player rules.

What is the MK Guild?

The MK Guild is a weekly organised play event for Dungeons & Dragons in Milton Keynes. It uses fifth edition rules from both 2014 and 2024, with local rules for characters, rewards, advancement, and conduct.

Where and when do games happen?

Games run on Tuesday at Wargames Workshop, MK and on Wednesday at The Plough, Simpson.

How do I sign up?

Sign up for a player spot in the Discord event-signup channel. Tuesday session spots are posted at 10am on Saturday. Wednesday session spots are posted at 10am on Sunday.

Can I just turn up without signing up?

You might be able to play as a walk-in if there is space, but it is not guaranteed. Signing up gives you a guaranteed place when enough DMs are available.

What do I need to bring?

Bring access to the D&D player rules, a character sheet, a logsheet, dice, and something for notes. The free basic rules on D&D Beyond are enough to begin.

What level does my character start at?

New Guild characters start at level 1. They begin in Tier 1 and advance by earning milestones from adventures.

Can I roll for ability scores?

No. Guild characters use either the standard array or 27 point cost. Rolling for ability scores is not allowed because it creates balance issues between characters.

Which D&D rules version should I use?

If your base class is from 2024 or later, use 2024 character creation and the latest version of available options. If your base class is from before 2024, use the 2014 character creation rules and pre-2024 character options.

How do tiers work?

Tier 1 is levels 1-4, Tier 2 is levels 5-10, Tier 3 is levels 11-16, and Tier 4 is levels 17-20. You should sign up for games in your character's current tier.

How does levelling work?

Characters gain 1 milestone after each adventure. Tier 1 characters need 1 milestone to level, Tier 2 characters need 2, Tier 3 characters need 3, and Tier 4 characters need 1. You can decline a milestone if you want to stay at your current level.

How do renown and gold work?

Renown is tied to you as a player and can be spent for another character. You usually gain 2 renown per adventure, or 1 if you gain a permanent magic item. Gold belongs to the character who earned it and cannot be transferred.

How are magic items awarded?

The players can decide who keeps a found magic item or roll off for it. The DM can override that if they strongly feel the item should go to a particular character. Characters cannot keep magic items above their tier's maximum rarity.

Can a new player join a Tier 2 game with only a Tier 1 character?

If a new player only has Tier 1 characters and only higher-tier games are running, an exception can be made. Their character can temporarily play at level 5 for a Tier 2 game, then return to their normal level afterwards. They can claim the milestone, renown, and half gold, but not magic items from that adventure.

Who should I speak to about a conduct concern?

Speak to a Council member, DM, admin, or Wargames Workshop if you are concerned by someone's behaviour or feel uncomfortable. The rules ask players not to stay silent about issues that may affect the safety or enjoyment of the group.

Are there any unfinished rules in the source document?

Yes. The source PDF has blank or incomplete text for PVP and one spell and magical effects rule. This site marks those sections as TBD until MK Guild admins confirm the exact wording.
